Benheck.com Podcast Episode 69

We’re back with another amazing podcast! In this episode we discuss:

  • Movie reviewers should quit. With terrible movies coming out every weekend (and making money every weekend) it’s clear nobody reads, or cares, about movie reviews. We discuss.
  • Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2.
  • The Cider House Rules.
  • Why videogame quality keeps going up while movie quality keeps going down.
  • Crappy romantic comedies / Matthew McConaughey’s aversion to shirts.

Enjoy!

  1. Ben,
Was this most recent Podcast added to the RSS feed correctly?
Only the description seems to be present in the feed; not the
actual MP3 file Podcast for #69.

    Enjoying the Podcasts thus far;
    Looking forward to this one.

  2. Too Human probably fits into that mold you were discussing. Movies that are made to set up a series. Too Human is probably the best game equivalent of that. Probably a big reason why it failed.
    Although there are other examples.
Seems like every time a studio announces that an upcoming game will be the “first in a series”, the game fails and the subsequent series never materializes. Of course, financing is easier for movies. It’s almost impossible for the investors of a movie not to make their money back.

  3. Movie reviewers should quit. Me, I’m mostly about being entertained when I go see a movie. I prefer mindless comedies (The Hangover), so whether or not Ed Helms was convincing is his role as a whipped boyfriend is irrelevant. All I know is it was one very funny movie, and I was entertained.

Videogame quality used to be relegated to graphics and reaching a goal. Now it has plots and more purpose, which improves the videogaming experience. Movies haven’t improved over the years (with the exception of computer-animated movies), and the acting is a lessor quality from years gone by, with the exception of the new 007, Leonardo DiCaprio and most foreign actors.

Matthew McConaughey is to romantic comedies as Keanu Reeves is to sci-fi thrillers.

  4. I do have the admit that film critics aren’t completely useless…

For instance, a film like “The Hurt Locker” is one I normally wouldn’t care about but the combination of critical acclaim and awards success has me interested. Likewise, from time to time, there are movies that I would have written off as dreck but then they get solid reviews and I become curious enough to see them. “Drag Me to Hell” would be a somewhat recent example of this (and I thoroughly enjoyed the film).

By and large critics I don’t put a lot of stock in what they say, but it is fun to hear someone else’s opinion/perspective on a film. Whether I agree with it or not is hear nor there. That said, it is pretty rare that a review will put my ass in a seat at the movie theater.

  5. Jones, I’d be in the same boat as you pretty much. The main use of movie critics is to read their opinions, then bitch to a friend how they’re all morons and don’t understand. One of my favorites being THX 1138.

  6. OMG, how did you not rip on Nicolas Cage!!

He has the acting skills of a bald fat used car salesman

  7. Nic Cage is awesome! Especially when he is allowed to go completely nuts in a movie.

So yeah, that’s why I didn’t rip on him. LOL
